Perhaps it could but I don't think it would catch on. I think people need to believe in something that is bigger than us all, it gives them a certain degree of comfort. Strangely, in a world where anything is possible, people feel the need to believe that they have limits and boundaries and most religions, especially Christianity/Catholicism give this to them. Basically a sense of false security. On top of that science is beginning to scare people, things never thought possible are now mundane, cloning for example has now been accomplished and people are up in arms, so when it comes to a technology that could potentially destroy a main part of religion, people see that as a potential attack on their safe house i.e. the hypothetical box in which they live and this scares them out of their wits. So even though I, personally, quite enjoy science and all it has giving us most people would fear such technology and probably shun it.
