If you have only a black and white wire in the switch box then you have what is called a switch loop , so you would have at least 2 sets of wires in the fan and you prob. wired it wrong, the white wire from the switch would need to splice with the black wire from the feed up in the fan and the black from the switch would go to the fan black and the white from the feedin the fan would go to the fan
